EVENT: HEXXED open studio practice, robbinschilds

HEXXED (open studio practice for EFA) probes into the complexities surrounding authorship and authenticity, specifically how each member of a group influences the outcome of a day’s work, the building of material and ultimately a finished composition. The practice challenges assumptions of ‘sole’ authorship, focusing on the process of collaboration not merely as a creative strategy, but for its’ use explicitly as a feminist platform from which to cull a stronger collective vision. robbinschilds will be enacting an open rehearsal practice along with their collaborators, Aretha Aoki, Anna Azrieli, Bessie McDonough-Thayer, Eleanor Smith and Mariana Valencia.

robbinschilds was formed by choreographers, Sonya Robbins and Layla Childs in 2003. Though trained in and rooted by a background in dance, robbinschilds often works outside of that discipline, engaging in site-specific and installation-based performances that contain elements of video, sound and sculpture. robbinschilds' performances have been presented in NYC at Art in General, The Kitchen, PS 122, Dance Theater Workshop, MoMA PS 1, The New Museum, Movement Research at Judson Church, DanceSpace Project at St. Mark's Church. The company was presented at Pica's 2009 TBA festival (Portland, OR), SFMOMA (San Francisco, CA), CAF (Santa Barbara, CA), The Art Center (Salina, KS), Marfa Ballroom, (Marfa, TX), Images Festival (Toronto, Canada) and The Donau Festival (Krems, Austria). robbinschilds' video art has been exhibited at Human Resources, Los Angeles, CA, Art in General NYC, the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, MoMA/PS1, Vaska Emanouilova Gallery Sofia, Bulgaria, The Physics Room in Christchurch, NZ , Zendai MoMa Shanghai, China, The New Museum, NYC, Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid, Spain, Taxter and Spengemann gallery and BAM's 2007 Next Wave series. Their work is featured in such permanent collections as Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles, CA) and the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum (Lincoln, MA).
